The order of the karate belts also differ in different schools.

The color of the belt signifies the level of achievement, and starts from a lighter shade to a darker one. Each have similar roots, but hold uniqueness in technique and belt progression. A step ahead of yellow belts, an orange belt now has an anchor more secure into the ground.

This early karate belt ranking system included only three belt colors: White Belt (three grades / kyu ranks) Brown Belt (three grades / kyu ranks) Black Belt (ten grades / dan ranks) Other than white and black, the colors of karate belts are yellow, orange, red, green, blue, purple and brown.

Some Karate Styles also use black stripe attached across or along the belt.
