Colorism
Colorism. Research has linked colorism to smaller incomes, lower marriage rates, longer prison terms, and fewer job prospects for darker-skinned people. It's widespread across all genders and groups of color.
Simply stated, colorism is the preference for light skin over dark skin, which some call an unspoken secret that's lasted for generations within communities of color. Colorism disadvantages people with darker skin while privileging those with lighter skin. Colorism is a form of racism that disadvantages darker tones and advantages of lighter tones.
The idea of colorism doesn't stop with Black women.
The term colorism describes social hierarchies that privilege light-skin people of color over their darker-skinned peers.
For me the first time I think I noticed colorism in Hollywood was when I observed one of my favorite. Colorism can be most pronounced among people of color when internalized oppression undercuts solidarity. Lighter slaves were more favored than darker slaves, though all slaves were dehumanized.
